Palpation Without Clinical Thinking Is Just Routine. Handout

During oral cancer screenings, lymph node palpation can easily become a routine step performed from memory rather than clinical reasoning.

But lymph nodes are more than anatomical checkpoints. They are regional reporters. Different lymph nodes drain highly specific areas of the head and neck, meaning enlargement, tenderness, asymmetry, or fixation may provide important clues about localized inflammation, infection, or underlying pathology.

This handout was designed to simplify lymphatic drainage patterns for the practicing clinician while helping transform palpation from a mechanical habit into a more thoughtful clinical skill.
